When Stouffer's offered to send us a sample of their new Sautes for Two, we were kind of excited. Obviously we love to cook, but sometimes when we've got a half dozen projects going on at once, dinner time can get just a wee bit stressful. What? You want me to put down the paint brush and cook dinner?
The most stressful day of the week for us is always Friday. It's my busiest work day; I usually have to be at my desk extra early just to be able to finish work at a reasonable hour. When S gets home for work he's ready to take the weekend by storm, but I'm usually not done with work, we're both starving and it just makes getting excited for the weekend's projects a drag. So a couple of weeks ago we decided to make Friday night special (and a whole lot less stressful) by treating ourselves to Stouffer's Grilled Chicken & Asiago Tortelloni Sautes for Two.
I wish I could say that we ate at the dining room table while admiring the new paint on our walls and trim, but we didn't. We sat in front of S's laptop and researched windows and basement contractors.
Some people save for years for a great vacation, we save for home improvements, so sharing a meal while checking out windows was our version of a special night.
Now it's your turn; leave us a comment telling us how you make an ordinary night extraordinary for a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card from BlogHer. I promise we won't judge you if you don't use it for home improvements!

We do it by finding the extraordinary within the ordinary. Laughing as we cook together. The beauty of delicious food and a shared meal. The fun of reminiscing about our days.

Since we have a toddler sleeping upstairs, we don't do anything crazy. Just putting down our separate books or laptops and doing something (anything!) together makes it a special night.

This is a good thing to think about because I want to make every night extraordinary! I do it by trying to do something a little special like play tennis with my husband or taking the dogs to the beach. It takes extra effort but it's so worth it!
ReplyDeleteButter pecan ice cream.
ReplyDeleteI usually make a special dinner or dessert to make the night special. Now that we (finally) got on the Netflix train, watching a DVD together can be a special night. They key is being together.
ReplyDeleteWe have adventures! It could be anything- a trip to the grocery store, visiting a friend, watching a movie, playing a video game, or painting the house! With our senses of humor and our love of silliness, the possibilites are endless!

We often have champagne with our dinner at home - it adds a bit of celebration and sparkle to an otherwise ordinary day. Champagne also goes great with almost anything! Sparkling juices are another nice treat when we're not in the mood for anything alcoholic. We use fancy glasses even if we're eating our food off of paper plates.

When I want to make an ordinary night extraordinary, my husband and I will eat dinner on the back patio (instead of on the couch in front of the tv.) We wired speakers out there so we can listen to music also!

ReplyDeleteLooking ahead to the summer, we like to take an after-dinner walk to the local ice cream stand with our son (which will be two sons this summer!).

ReplyDeletemaddiemb {at} comcast (dot) net
I'm with the majority....a special dessert...maybe I'll make it extra special and try to stay awake past 9. :P
ReplyDeleteA night with a good tv show that we BOTH like.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I have the tradition of having steak and shrimp fondue for special evenings or holidays. I know--you think fondue??!! But we work together getting it ready, enjoy eating a nice slow meal, and watch a movie and talk as we eat, and share the clean up. It is fun to cook the steak & shrimp in the hot oil, and since we do it infrequently it is special to us.....
ReplyDeleteI like to surprise my husband with some of this favorite desserts to go with a special dine-in dinner
ReplyDeleteWhen I can leave work at a reasonable hour and get home in time, we go for a Family Walk: me, hubs, puppy, and a big handful of kibble for dispensing along the way to encourage good behavior. When there are no "OMG, another puppy! Cannot contain myself!" moments, it truly is extraordinary. ;)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I have a Wii playoff. We grab a beer and laugh together. It reminds us of our carefree college days and that we can still let loose and be silly. The prize is set before the game sometimes its taking the dog out other times its a massage.
ReplyDeleteWe make an ordinary extra ordinary by going to out local pizzeria and buying some fresh dough, we then go home and make our own pizza. We then will enjoy our pizza with some great wine or beer, and music or a good movie.
ReplyDeleteI usually end our night, usually something homemade for dinner, with a dessert- either ice cream, homemade cookies or a hot chocolate. I know it's not a good habit but it puts a smile on my face!

All it takes is an extra special meal around here. One secret is to serve fresh bread and dipping oil. It feels like we're in a restaurant when we do that. Especially if I use my fiestaware dipping bowls. Woo hoo! Paaaaaaaaarty!
ReplyDeleteI like to always have freshly baked bread :)

ReplyDeleteAlicia.Faye.lambert@gmail.com
I make up a quick cake (from scratch but it mixes in the pan so super fast & easy) and we play a game.
ReplyDeleteI use candles and the good dishes, lower the lights and open a bottle of wine :)
ReplyDeleteTo me the ordinary is extraordinary. Just sitting on the couch and watching tv with the husband and the puppy makes for a wonderful evening.

ReplyDeleteBoth of us are a bit of heath freaks, especially when it comes to food, so we spend quality time by cooking together. Our work hours are often long and unpredictable, but we still make it a point to cook together, especially on weekends, when we often prepare our meals for the week. (ummyah@hotmail.com)
